From a very young age, you learned your native tongue by hearing it, and later speaking it. Trying to learn a completely different language takes time and patience.  However, English is the universal language, and the most spoken language across the world, so learning it makes a lot of sense, especially if you’re going to travel or go into business. There are many different ways to learn a new language; some work well, some not so well.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of learning English using an app.

English Learning Apps

Learning English from an app on your smartphone, tablet or laptop sounds like an easy and convenient way to do it, and it can be for some.  Programs such as Rosetta Stone, Duolingo, Babbel, Beelinguapp, Hello English and FluentU can all be helpful if used correctly, and often enough.  Many have a free version, or a free trial, and a paid version which gives you more, and they all take different approaches to teaching English. You need to find the one which best suits your learning style.

The Advantages

Learning English with an app means you can fit a lesson in almost anywhere, making your downtime more productive. As long as you’re committed to learning English and use the app as often as possible, you can become quite proficient in the language.

The Disadvantages

While English learning apps are a great supplement to your studies, they’re not personalised enough. Therefore you might miss something important and never know it. You also don’t learn the particular nuances of English that you’d get from a face-to-face experience with a native English speaker. It’s been shown that people who learn from apps alone only retain about 20% of the information. While those who learn with others and use the language immediately can retain up to 90%, especially if they then teach it to others.

English as a Second Language

To truly learn how to speak English, you need to immerse yourself in the language and have real conversations with other people. That’s how you learned your own language when you were young, and it’s the best way to learn English. Taking an English language course in an English speaking country, especially if you’re planning to live and work there, will ensure you become fluent quickly and efficiently.
