Australians not only love the outdoors, but we also love being active. The sport and recreation industry is a booming sector with a variety of job roles and career opportunities. It is one of the most interesting fields as well.

If you love sports and staying active, you might want to consider a career in this industry. Studying a Sport and Recreation qualification can give you a head start. You will gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience, as well as an understanding of the sporting industry through projects, case studies and scenarios.

Let us take you through the qualifications that can help you succeed in gaining employment in this field:

Certificate I & Certificate II in Sport and Recreation

This is suited to those wanting to develop introductory knowledge and skills in the industry. You will learn essential skills such as providing first aid, providing assistance for activities, administration, customer support, and preparing equipment. If you’re looking at familiarising yourself with the sports and recreation scene, this is a great place to start.

Certificate III Sport and Recreation

For those wishing to enter the industry at a level appropriate to their skills and knowledge and have a deeper involvement in the workplace, then a Certificate III will also prepare you to assist and guide others. At this level, you will be designing programs, learning coaching skills, and how to work towards entry into the Instructor or Coach Level in the future, or entry into a course at a higher level (Cert IV or Diploma).

There is a diverse pathway for careers in a range of locations including sporting grounds or complexes, aquatic centres, leisure and community recreation centres, or sporting organisations and associations.

Diploma of Sport (Sport Development)

For a management level qualification, the Diploma of Sport (Sport Development) will provide you with the skills and knowledge to manage events and athletes. Outcomes for the Diploma level qualification include competition manager, program developer, or talent and athlete development manager.

Depending on your career aspirations, you will be able to find job roles for all levels. From a community activities officer, to a recreation coordinator, through to a competition manager; the varied roles allow for many opportunities in this industry.
